The Frank Grisanti Athlete of the Week recipients for the week April 9, 2018 are as follows...

7/8 Coach Pitch Division: Hudson Miller - Cardinals

Coaches Comments: Our focus this year as a team has been to give maximum effort and improve each game.  Before the game I talked to the players about running to first base as hard as they could, no matter where the ball was hit.  In the top of the 2nd inning, Hudson Miller hit a hard grounder to 2nd base.  Hudson immediately ran as fast as he could to first, unfortunately for Hudson,  the 2nd basemen made a great play and threw Hudson out by less than a step.   Hudson kept his head up and hustled back to the dugout.  His entire team saw how hard he was working and followed in his footsteps.  We had 2 players in the very next inning beat the throw to first base simply because they gave maximum effort like Hudson did.   Hudson has worked hard all season, and has done a great job inspiring his team.

9/10 Division: Cort King - Braves

Coaches Comments: Cort is playing his first year in GBL after playing previously with his school at Briarcrest.  Since practice began Cort has epitomized the type of player that a coach loves.  He listens very well to coaching and always responds with a "yes sir" and a smile.  Cort's attitude and sportsmanship in both practice and games sets a great example for the rest of the team.  Although Cort had never pitched previously, he has emerged as one of our team's top pitchers.  He listens attentively to instruction from his coaches and his pitching has improved with each practice and game.  On Tuesday of this week, Cort injured a finger on his catching hand while at school.  Due to our shortage of pitchers Tuesday night, we asked Cort if he could try and pitch for a short period.  Cort agreed to try and, although it was uncomfortable for him to catch balls back from the catcher, responded by pitching two terrific innings, including one inning where he held the opposing team to no runs and gave our team a great chance to win the game in the bottom of the last inning.

11/12 Division: Oakley Wilson - Cubs

Coaches Comments: I’ve got a young man, Oakley Wilson, that has a great attitude. Will do anything I ask, will play anywhere, and doesn’t care. I let him start at pitcher our second game - first time he’s ever pitched. He gave up five in the first, and came off the field happier than I’ve ever seen someone that just gave up five runs.  I let him go back out in the second and he pitched a scoreless inning. The young man has a great attitude, and made his first career appearance as a pitcher, didn’t set the world on fire, but didn’t do bad, and was smiling through the whole thing.

13/14 Division: Jack McAnally - Cubs

Coaches Comments: During our Wed batting practice, I was shorthanded. Jack helped me throw BP, and also, without me asking, helped several of his teammates with their batting stance and swing. He showed leadership, patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help his teammates improve.

15/18 Division: Nick Staub - Pirates

Coaches Comments: I am nominating Nick Staub as player of the week for pitching vs the Yankees in an 8-2 win. Nick pitched 2 innings, had 4 strikeouts, and stayed cool under pressure. Nick is a good leader on the field and off, and has a cheerful & positive attitude that is contagious. Great job Nick!
